The first thing to consider for your DIY swing set is how many swings or accessories you want on it. For ours, we included two traditional swings, one saucer swing, and a trapeze bar. Next, you will need to determine the dimensions for the lumber. Once you have these basics figured out, you can purchase your materials.
This part of the DIY Swing Set instructions was written by my husband. I’m sure you will enjoy his witty humor!

Next on the DIY Swing Set are the legs:

Well, there you have it! Now you’ve built a DIY swing set that will save you tons of money and that your kids will enjoy. If you have any questions, leave a comment below and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can!

Circling Raven Golf Club was rated Idaho’s #1 Public Course in Idaho by Golfweek in 2023. Additionally, it is part of the Epson Tour, the qualifying event for the LPGA, held annually. The prestigious golf course is located at the Coeur d’Alene Casino & Resort in Worley, ID – surrounded by the gorgeous Rocky Mountains and Lake Coeur d’Alene.
As a golfing couple, my husband and I knew that a round of golf at Circling Raven was a must-do activity as we planned for things to do in Coeur d’Alene. We packed our golf clubs for the trip, ready to enjoy a day out on the fairway.
Circling Raven Golf Club is located at the Coeur d’Alene Casino Resort Hotel at 38530 S Nukwalqw St, Worley, ID. It is 25 miles southwest of Coeur d’Alene, ID and 35 miles southeast of Spokane, WA.
We drove to Circling Raven during our anniversary trip to Coeur d’Alene. The drive to the course was scenic along the gorgeous Rocky Mountains.
Circling Raven Golf Club has a vast history of Native American land and heritage. The course was originally Native American land to the Coeur d’Alene Tribe, and named after the prestigious Indian Chief, Circling Raven. You can see Native American imagery and art displayed throughout the course.

Circling Raven Golf Club is a par 72 course, covering 7189 yards. The front and back 9 are each a traditional par 36. The holes had wide-open fairways surrounded by trees and gorgeous views from the Rocky Mountains and Coeur d’Alene Lake. The North Fork Rock Creek runs through the back-9 of the course, bringing water hazards to the last few holes.

Circling Raven Golf Club is designed for the average-to-experienced golfer. The layout brings wide-open fairways, but tough hazards with trees, sand traps, and water. The course is maintained well with excellent landscaping and manicured greens. Be careful of those sand traps, there are a lot of them!

The tees have 5 options to hit from depending on skill level: Gold, Blue, White, Green, and Red. Golfers can also choose from the Blue/White, White/Green, or Green/Red combos. I played the Green/Red combo, while my husband and the two other players in our group played from the Blue tees.
I recommend purchasing a cart when playing the course. Some of the tee boxes were a long drive from the greens.

Golfers and visitors can dine at Circling Raven’s restaurant, Twisted Earth Grill. The menu is full of a wide variety of breakfast and lunch items, including eggs benedicts, French toast, sandwiches, salads, and appetizers. I ordered the Turkey Sandwich, and my husband ordered the Club Sandwich. We both enjoyed our sandwiches and experienced excellent service in the grill.

Circling Raven Golf Club is a well-designed course with gorgeous views and challenging play. The entire course is well-kept and maintained for a great experience.
Golfing at Circling Raven was one of the highlights of our Coeur d’Alene trip. As a golfing couple, it was a fantastic way to celebrate our anniversary, while enjoying a day out on the course together.
Everyone we encountered on the course was pleasant – from the restaurant staff to the golf rangers and the pair we were matched with. We wouldn’t hesitate to play again at Circling Raven the next time we visit Coeur d’Alene.

*** We received a free round of 18 holes at Circling Raven Golf Club in exchange for a blog post review. All opinions are my own. ***
The family has been cooped up for way too long from a long winter, and let’s be honest – the kids aren’t the only ones going stir-crazy! I know I’m ready for some fun in the sun. Anyone else?! I know everyone’s budget looks different, so I went even further to break down these kids’ outdoor activities by price ranges. I hope you enjoy these products, and they help you get your family outdoors for some summer fun!
The toss-and-catch ball set is a classic. Heck… these were even around when I was a kid, and they would keep my brother and me entertained daily. These should be in everyone’s outdoor play basket!
Remember back in the day when we would fill each water balloon and hope it didn’t pop when we tied it? Well, that is a thing of the past! Fill these water balloons within 2 minutes with the hose – and done!
For those breezy days, get a kite! It doesn’t matter how much things change. The awe of a flying kite will always be around for kids.
This kids’ double inflatable pool float makes it easy-peasy to take two babies or toddlers to the pool. The Poolmaster Mommy & US Dual Baby Rider is for children ages 8-24 months or up to 40 lbs. per child.
This backyard inflatable pool is sure to be a hit on those hot summer days! Just connect it to your hose and let the kids have fun. This is a favorite summer kids’ outdoor activity at our house.
The Schwinn Echo 2 Seat Trailer is one of our favorite outdoor activities for kids. Our family enjoys a bike ride with our toddler and preschooler in the double trailer on warm summer days. Our go-to ride is around the nearby lake with a stop for a fun ice cream break!
The Radio Flyer Odyssey is hands-down worth the cost! If you have two toddlers/preschoolers who have outgrown a stroller, the push wagon will get you out of the house and out to the parks. I chose the Radio Flyer Odyssey over the Jeep push wagon option because of the extended handlebars and easy steering. There are great areas in and around the wagon for storing snacks, jackets, blankets, and beverages. I highly recommend it!
If you are looking to cut costs on a swing set and enjoy building things, the DIY swing set might be a good fit for your family. When considering our options, building our own swing set cut the cost by hundreds for us. It’s sturdy, customizable, and our children love it. Check out my blog post on the DIY swing set for step-by-step directions on how it was built.

We hope you enjoyed this list of budget-friendly outdoor activities for kids. If you have any other recommendations, list them in the comments below!
Raising our kids in a home of faith is important to my husband and me. When we live by faith in all areas of live, we are building a strong foundation for our children in God through the love of his son, Jesus.
“For we live by faith, not by sight.” – 2 Corinthians 5:7
“Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old, they will not turn from it.“ – Proverbs 22:6
Teaching kids about God is not just teaching them about the Bible, but truly living by it. We do so by teaching our kids the basics of the Bible, which is expressed through love. We understand that we love others because God first loved us (1 John 4:19) and that God showed us love by giving His only son to die for our sins (John 3:16). The word “love” is in the Bible more than 300 times – the exact number depends on the version.

We live by faith with our kids in all areas of life – attending church, reading the bible, being prayerful, and giving God glory in all we do. The home should be the center of moral teaching. Don’t rely solely on the church to teach your children Christian values. It should be a way of life for the family. We want our kids to know and understand that we love them deeply and that God loves them even more.

Below are some ways for how to teach kids about God and to live by faith in the home.
When teaching kids about God, talk about Him in everyday conversation. For example, when you are outside with your kids, point out things like trees, the sky, and animals, which God created. Ask them what they think God has created. Share with them that He also gave people jobs and ideas to build cars, houses, and toys. Explain to them that God is good and everything that He creates is good.
Share the attributes of God, like love, grace, and forgiveness. These are the qualities that Jesus displayed during His time on earth, and we are to be like Him.
Music and television are very influential to kids. In our home, we enjoy watching music videos from Listener Kids. They have videos with dancing animals and other characters to Sunday school classics like “Jesus Loves Me” and “This is the Day That the Lord Has Made.” My oldest daughter is understanding concepts like having Jesus in her heart and that we serve a mighty God from Listener Kids’ music.
In the car, we enjoy listening to K-Love and Way FM. Listening to their music also helps me have peace in parenting. The day-to-day activities can build up and get busy, but listening to Christian music helps me return to the purpose of it all.
We read Bible Story Book for Kids, which teaches children about important stories from the Bible, such as David and Goliath and the story of Moses. I love children’s bible storybooks because they are written at an age level that they can understand. God Bless You and Goodnight is a personal favorite bedtime story to read to the kids.
To live by faith in the home with kids, prayer is essential. Pray before meals, at night, and throughout the day. We pray the “Come, Lord Jesus, Be Our Guest” prayer before meals with our kids. It’s easy for them to remember, and our oldest enjoys leading us in prayer with it. At night, we pray for all our family members and include things we are thankful for that day.

As mentioned previously, we believe that love is the basis of faith, and that’s what we focus on in our parenting style. Live out love for your family shown by the fruits of the spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). Let your kids see you live out your faith through reading the Bible, worship, and prayer.
Surround your kids with other Christian families who hold similar values. When they have questions about faith, they have supporters who can lift them up both in and out of the home.

Christmastime is a season full of memories, laughter, and quality time with family. At the same time, it can be stressful with all the party planning and gift shopping. With kids, it can be hard to keep up with the latest trends in gifts, especially when you are on a budget. Christmas shopping on a budget is easy when you can plan ahead.
Without proper planning, it is easy to overspend and impulse buy. I want to share with you the ways that you can keep Christmas gifts and party planning within your budget and make it fun for the family.

Set a budget for your gift purchases. Before coming up with a final number, you will want to calculate a breakdown of gifts. You can create a spreadsheet to keep track of the people you are buying for and the items you plan to buy. It’s best to not only come up with the number for your spending but also decide what you will buy as well. Without knowing what you want to buy, it is easy to be led into temptation by holiday sales.
Here is an example spreadsheet for Christmas gifts:
| Kid 1 | $100 | Dollhouse, dresses |
| Kid 2 | $100 | Bike, shoes |
| Spouse | $100 | Camping gear |
| Parent 1 | $25 | Shirt |
| Parent 2 | $25 | Jewelry |
| Sibling | $25 | Book, mug |
| Teacher | $25 | Gift card |
| Boss | $25 | Gift card |
| Friend | $25 | Book |
Stores make a major profit off their Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales. Black Friday has become such a profitable time for businesses, that it has gone from a one-day sale to nowadays a week-long sale or even longer.
Seeing big-ticket items go on sale can cause impulse buys from purchases you would not have made otherwise. Don’t be tempted by big sales. Stick to your original spreadsheet and what you plan on purchasing. If one of your gift items goes on sale, then this is the perfect time to buy. If it’s not on your list, don’t buy it.
There are many great apps for cashback on everyday purchases, like Ibotta and Rakuten. Around the holidays, they tend to have even bigger cashback rewards. Download the apps ahead of time and set up your cashback rewards before you shop. I wrote about cashback rewards and other shop n’ save tips in my thrifty shopping post.
If you have unused rewards built up on from credit cards, now would be a great time to use them if you are Christmas shopping on a budget. Depending on the credit card, you can purchase gift cards with rewards or apply them toward statement credit.

You probably have a stack of unused gift cards you forgot about – we all do. Now is a great time to put them to use. You can apply them toward gifts you plan to buy or even regift them.
This is especially a good idea if you don’t shop at the store that you received a gift card to, but a family member or friend might enjoy. Gift cards typically don’t expire, so no one will know!

There is nothing wrong with buying gently used gifts - especially for kids who will outgrow them. Facebook Marketplace has a lot of great deals for electronics, sports equipment, baby gear, and more. If you see something you want to buy, be quick to respond and meet up. I have sold items on Marketplace before and have had multiple people reach out at once about what I’m selling.
I personally love shopping at Kid to Kid. It is a store for secondhand items just for kids. I can always find good purchases at great deals. I bought a Radio Flyer wagon which was $90 off the original price. I walked out of the store as a proud mama that day!
If you are hosting or attending a Christmas party, talk to your family about just buying gifts for the kids. Instead of wondering who will buy you a gift and if you should be them one too (aunts, uncles, cousins), talk to them about just buying for the kids. Oftentimes we feel obligated to buy gifts for relatives, but don’t need to. You might find that they are on the same page as you. After all, it’s easy to buy the things we want. There is nothing like seeing the excitement of Christmas in a child’s eyes.
You may not have kids at your holiday party, so a Secret Santa may be a better option. This will help you limit your shopping for extended family (or coworkers if it is a work party). Ask your group to fill out a list of things they like (favorite color, beverage, activity, etc.).
Draw names out of a hat that you will assign to each person at random. The list of things they like will help the gift giver so they’re not shopping at random. Each person (Secret Santa) will buy for the person they were assigned. This way, everyone gets to give a gift and receive a gift. Giving a gift to others is optional.
While some people enjoy giving and receiving gifts, not everyone does. Some people prefer quality time together. Get in the Christmas spirit with your kids and keep gifts to a minimum. Teach your kids about the real reason for Christmas and focus on the traditions your family has created.
I had an interesting discussion with a group of moms who had asked their children what they remembered from the previous Christmas. The kids didn’t mention the latest and greatest gifts that they received. What was mentioned though, was the funny memories from a crazy uncle, or a memory of grandpa reading A Christmas Story every year. This goes to show that the bonding time is what is most memorable for a child at Christmas.

More than likely, your kids won’t regularly play with every toy you bought them – and some may even end up unused. Keep in mind that less is more this holiday season. From one mom to another, I know that the holidays can be a busy season, and I know that you want things to go smoothly for your family. But remember that cherished time together is the gift that keeps on giving.

Finding time to workout as a working mom can be challenging, especially when you have young children. My kids are ages 3 and 1, so between work and home life, I am very busy. However, I found that one specific thing needed to change if I was going to be an active mom – making exercise a priority. It may sound too simple but hear me out. If you don’t make exercise a priority, you are only going to fit it in when it is convenient for you. In this article, I share how to find time to workout as a working mom and the benefits of making exercise a priority in parenting.

Before you can create a solid workout schedule, you will need to find the best time to workout. Between working and parenting, this takes some creativity. If you are a morning person, this is an obvious one. Workout before the kids wake up. For others who are not morning people, like me, this is not as doable.
Here are some options for a busy mom workout schedule if you are NOT a morning person:
Personally, I workout during my work break. I have worked both in an office and from home, and this has been the best option for me. The last office I worked at had a small rec center in the building. I would eat my lunch while working and then head to the gym in the late afternoon. This broke up my day well because that is about the time I start to get tired and lose focus. Working out gave me the motivation to get through the rest of the afternoon. When I work from home, I do either at-home workouts or go to the local gym.

Let’s talk about habits. Your small habits, whether good or bad, are compounding to produce long-term results. This was something I learned from the book Atomic Habits by James Clear. Your current lifestyle may be setting you up for failure with your habits. If you walk into your house and there is a candy dish on the counter, you will most likely reach for that first when you want a snack. Replace that candy dish with a bowl of colorful apples and oranges. When your afternoon hunger kicks in, you will go for fruit instead. It is convenient and easy.
In his book, Clear mentions setting a “trigger” to do a good habit. My trigger for working out at the office was packing my workout clothes. I knew that if I put in the time in the morning to pack my workout clothes, I would workout in the afternoon. It was as easy as that. Find something that can trigger you to follow a healthy habit. Other examples of triggers can be shopping for healthy meals, (which would make you cook healthy meals) or setting your alarm clock 30 minutes earlier (which would allow you time to workout first thing in the morning).
In my post, Consistency is the Key to Getting Results I mention how we often don’t continue with the good habits we start because we do not see immediate results. You need to have a strong “why” behind your goals as your foundation. When you plateau or get discouraged, revisit your “why” again.
My why is that I want to role model living an active lifestyle to my kids by showing that it is both fun and healthy. I also want to keep up with them when they are older and playing sports.
Hiring a coach is a helpful way to create better habits and stick to a workout plan. I recommend Taylor Gates Wellness. Her services include weekly tips, recipes, and inspiration to help encourage you to reach your goals, as well as personalized workouts and nutrition recommendations. Taylor is not only a great friend of mine, but also another mom I trust when it comes to health and fitness advice. I personally have benefitted from her personal training and coaching services!
Having strong mental health as a mom is as important as ever. As moms, we spend a lot of time giving to our families and careers with little in return. Finding time to workout as a working mom gives YOU the break you need to focus on yourself. Working out will give you a clearer mind and allow you to be present with your family. It will also allow you to be even-tempered because you let out your energy in a healthy way.
If you are struggling with your mental health, I have been there – more than once. Read my post titled I Love My Kids, But Being a Mom is Hard to learn about how I coped with postpartum depression.
When you find time to workout as a working mom, you are showing your family that staying active is important to you. Spend time also exercising in front of your kids. They will want to try it too and will soon learn that exercising can be fun.
Kids learn so much from watching their parents. When you make staying active a priority to you, then it will become a priority for your kids too. If your kids play sports, you will be able to keep up with them because you took the time to focus on your own fitness.
Working out gives you more energy. As I mentioned earlier, I enjoy working out during my work breaks. By the afternoon, my brain starts getting foggy and my mind is not as sharp. However, when I break up the workday with a workout, I have energy and mental clarity to focus again.
Kids have so much energy, and it can be hard to keep up. When you find time to workout as a mom, you can find the energy to keep up with them.
I am personally a big fan of Peloton. You can join their workouts without having their equipment. Most people know them for their cycle bike, but they also have classes for strength, yoga, Pilates, boxing, and more. Their instructors are highly motivating!
Beachbody has workout videos you have most likely heard of like P90X, Insanity, PiYo, and the 21 Day Fix. They also have instructors who provide personal training and set up groups to stay accountable with one another for fitness and nutrition. I suggest Beachbody coach Kathryn Christensen. She is another mom who loves to exercise and motivate others!
Yoga With Adriene is a YouTube channel with hundreds of yoga videos and over 11 million subscribers. Adriene has personalized videos for any way you prefer your yoga practice.
Thank you for reading How to Find Time to Workout as a Working Mom. I hope this post was helpful to you and you find the motivation to make exercise a priority as a mom. There are so many great benefits of it and your kids will learn from you about the importance of fitness.

Paddle boarding is easily my new favorite outdoor activity. If you are curious about paddle boarding for the first time, you have come to the right place. Imagine floating on a lake alongside your friends while laughing, getting exercise, and drinking a beer; all without the cost and maintenance of a boat. That’s how I would describe it. Before I get into the experience of paddle boarding, I want to first mention the best stand up paddle board for beginners and what to wear paddle boarding.
This post contains affiliate links. I may receive a small commission if you purchase through a link on this page at no additional charge to you. Affiliate links help me pay for my site so I can continue to provide great content for my readers. Thank you for supporting my blog!
Prior to paddle boarding, I did some research and found that Body Glove is a trusted brand for SUP boards. Upon my findings, the Body Glove Performer 11 was the perfect mix of a beginner paddle board and amazing durability. It is an inflatable SUP board for easy packing and transferring. The Body Glove Performer 11 package comes with both a manual and electric pump, as well as a carrying bag. It also has a mount to add a GoPro camera. You can use the front of the board to store items like shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses, keys, and a cooler.
You will want to wear a swimsuit (with shorts if you prefer) and a life jacket. Yes, you need to wear a life jacket when paddle boarding. We went paddle boarding at Chatfield Reservoir, and Colorado Parks & Wildlife requires life jackets while paddle boarding. I imagine it’s the same at other state parks.
I bought a Body Glove Women’s Life Jacket for myself and a Body Glove Men’s Life Jacket for my husband. Both of our life jackets are light and comfortable.

The nice thing about paddle boarding is that it is easy to learn. Standing up takes balance and core strength, but you will catch on as your body gets used to it. You don’t have to stand up the whole time, or even at all. You can stay seated or kneel while paddle boarding.
Below are some tips I suggest while paddle boarding for the first time:
I suggest paddle boarding with friends who have been before. If you don’t know anyone who is a paddleboarder, join a group on Facebook. I am part of a Facebook group called Kayaking, Canoeing, and Paddle Boarding in Colorado and they often set meetups for paddle boarding.
When we went paddle boarding the first time with friends, they taught me how to effectively get on my board, where to go and not go on the lake, and how to stand up. Not to mention, we enjoyed some beer together on the lake with our paddles attached to one another’s boards. First, I didn’t know you could connect your boards together. Second, I didn’t know you could fit a cooler of beer on your board. That was cool!

To get on your paddle board, you will want to lean over onto your forearms to fill the width of the board. Using your weight to balance on your forearms, bring one leg up at a time. Continue to use your balance with your weight in the center of the board to pull yourself up.
It is important to keep your fin from hitting rocks and other things. Your fin keeps your board stable and straight. There will be times when the lake water is shallow, so be aware of your fin to keep it from hitting against the rocks.
The correct way to hold your paddle is with the blade angled forward. Typically, the logo is on the blade side, so keep the logo facing away from you. When paddling on the right side, put your left hand at the top and your right hand halfway down the paddle. Switch hand positions for the left side. Putting your hands too close together will keep you from gaining the most leverage from your strokes. Pull your paddle back using a J-Stroke.
Before standing on your paddle board, start on your knees. This will help you find your balance in a halfway position before fully standing. Keep your weight evenly between both of your knees. Leaning will cause you to tip over.
You can stand on your paddle board from the kneeling position or from the sitting position. Once you are in the kneeling position, put the opposite hand down on the board as the leg you are bringing up. This will keep your weight distributed evenly. Once you have one foot positioned on the board, stand up with a bend in your knees like you’re sitting in a chair. Slowly stand up all the way.
From the sitting position, form your body like a plank on the board. Walk your feet up toward your hands, keeping your weight on the opposite hand and foot. Once you have gained balance, slowly stand up with a bend in your knees until comfortably standing. If you have practiced yoga, think about it as going from a plank to a down dog, and then to standing.

Are you going on a family vacation and wondering how to make the drive go smoothly with your toddlers? Your road trip with toddlers doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With proper planning, you can make a fun adventure out of it. Some of these tricks we learned on our family road trip to Oklahoma. I also asked a Facebook group of moms to share their best tips for road tripping with toddlers. Here is what they said.

This was by far the most popular tip that was shared amongst moms on Facebook. While the kids are still asleep (around 4 or 5 am) pack them in the car and start your drive. They might wake up wondering what is going on but will fall back asleep. This will give you a few hours of quiet time before they wake up full of energy.
Having multiple snacks is a must on your road trip. Have the go-to snacks that you usually have at home as well as some new snacks they have never tried. Try not to overdo it with beverages, otherwise, you will need to make multiple stops at restrooms.
Put together bags of toys from Target’s Dollar section for your road trip with toddlers. Map out your road trip and open bags at different checkpoints. This will keep your toddlers entertained and excited to open the next bag.
Window clings are a big hit on a road trip with toddlers. I don’t know about you, but we do not use window clings in our house unless it is for the holidays. They will have a great time decorating the windows and moving the clings around.
I had never thought of this idea, but this was mentioned a couple of times in the Facebook group. I know that my toddlers love magnets, so I will try this trick on our next road trip.
A road trip with toddlers is a time when it’s a-okay to take out the tablet. Make sure to download tv shows ahead of time on Netflix. We usually download our kids’ favorite shows as well as a couple of new shows. I also suggest hanging the tablet on the back of the seat. Even with the lock button on, my daughter still found a way to get out of the tv show, making us have to start it up again.
Your toddlers will build up a lot of energy while sitting in the car for hours. I suggest stopping at parks along the way so they can let out some of that energy. Lunchtime is a great time to stop at a park. Enjoy a picnic together and let the kids play for a bit. After the stop, they can open one of their new bags of toys again.
I thought this response was pretty funny. If the kids are fighting, play the quiet game. Whoever talks first loses. Hopefully, this gives you some peace for just a minute before they start fighting again and demanding snacks.
I hope you enjoyed these hacks for road tripping with toddlers. If you’re looking for ideas on where to go for your next road trip, check out these great U.S. vacation destinations. Here is a list of some great things to do while you travel. Your kids are only young once, so enjoy the small things. Remember that you are creating memories that will last a lifetime.
This is easier said than done. We all know that consistency is the key to success. We hear it all the time in different contexts – “practice makes perfect,” “one step in front of the other,” and so on.
Many people know that to get results they need to stay consistent and will go on their merry way. But I’m guessing that’s not why you stumbled across this page. You want to know how to implement consistency and crush your goals.
I want to share with you the strategies that have helped me stay consistent and see results in my own life. So, let’s dive right into it!

Following these action steps will help you stay consistent with your goals. Consistency is the key to success, but it does take intentionality. Follow these steps to achieve your goals.

Having a strong “why” is the foundation for success. It’s what motivates you to continue. It’s what you fall back onto when things get tough. Your “why” can’t simply be, “I want to help people.” It needs to be stronger than this. When you are coming up with your why, it is best to find some quiet time. Search deeply for what is most important to you. Think about your morals and values.
A great book to read is Atomic Habits by James Clear. In his book, the author mentions that many people often give up on their goals because they are not seeing immediate results. However, small daily habits will create massive long-term results.
An interesting analogy he gave in the book was a plane flying from Los Angeles to New York City. If the angle of the plane changes by just 3-degrees south will land in Washington D.C. It seems like such a small change at first, but in the long term, it makes a big difference. This can be with both positive and negative changes. The small things we are doing today whether good or bad will create compounding results in the long run.
Use SMART Goals when coming up with a plan. That is goals that are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-Sensitive. Have the end goal in mind, and work backward to come up with monthly, weekly, and daily tasks to get you to your goal. Write your goals down and revisit them frequently.

When you tell someone about your plans, you are 1) more likely to go through with them; and 2) can have someone to keep you accountable. Be choosy with who you tell. Let this be someone you can count on to motivate and encourage you. I have made the mistake of telling the wrong people my plans in the past and received opinions that were unhelpful.
Make sure to use rewards that will align with your goals, and not make you regress. For instance, if you’re trying to lose weight, don’t celebrate with a fancy meal. Instead, celebrate with a fun activity. It is important to celebrate the small wins, not just the finished goal. This is especially important if you hit a plateau in your progress. Have an incentive to get you over that plateau and keep going.
This can come in many forms. The barrier may be your own negative thinking that will take a shift in mindset. It may also be something physical, like removing certain foods (alcohol, junk food, etc.) from your home. Another example is notifications that pop up on your phone and distract you from your work. In this case, you might put your phone in another room while you finish an important task.
Inevitably, challenges will come in the process. These can be financial, physical, mental, etc. People can become discouraged by them if they are not prepared. This is a great time to look back at your “why.” When the challenges come, DON’T GIVE UP. Prepare for them, face them, and work through them. Ask for guidance if you need it. Think back to times when you faced challenges before and what got you through them.
It is ok to miss going to the gym, making that number of sales calls, eating that junk food, or whatever goal you are trying to accomplish. Give yourself grace, but don’t do it again. Get back into it right away. A person who is not disciplined may fall back into the bad pattern again and think “what’s the point?” A disciplined person will find the motivation to get back on track again.
Look back at your plans and revisit your “why” often. You are your biggest motivator. Reaching your goals will take commitment and intentionality. Remember the feeling of when you were setting your goals in the first place.

I want to be the healthiest version I can be for both myself and my family. As a mom of young children, I want to introduce my girls to sports and outdoor activities growing up. With the energy that kids have, I want to participate with them and be a good role model for them in staying active.
I will talk to my husband and a friend about my plans. Share my progress with my husband who I know will encourage me. I will choose a friend who has similar goals of following healthy habits for accountability. Plan for weekly check-ins on Fridays and set a calendar reminder to check in.
Schedule date nights with husband for first 10 lbs. lost and each 5 lb. lost after. I will choose an active date such as bowling, golfing, or other activity. We will go to a restaurant for dinner, but I will still choose a healthy option to continue with my good progress.
I know that chips and dip and fries are my weakness. Instead of eliminating them together, I will limit myself to just 5, and eat them slower to enjoy them.
With the holidays coming up, I will be choosy about what I put on my plate. If I have sweets, I will limit them to smaller portions. Before arriving at a holiday function, I will eat a healthy snack to keep from overindulging and following cravings.
Some people may not understand why I am saying no to drinks or dessert at a function. Voices in my head might say that losing weight is too difficult or that I have failed in the past. I will choose not to dwell on those voices and remember my “why.”
I also know that I will at some point hit a plateau. In the past, I gave up at this point. This time, I will be aware that it is coming and will change my plan to persevere through it, because consistency is the key to success.
I will give myself grace if I miss a workout or don’t follow good eating habits. Then, I will get back into it the next day, and not let it dictate the rest of the week.
I will revisit this post for inspiration or when challenges come. I know that I am ready to make fitness and healthy eating part of my lifestyle.
Now that you know consistency is the key to success and the steps to take. Staying consistent to your goals doesn’t need to be hard when you have a strong “why.” Always revisit your “why” when you get off track. Having an accountability partner, like a mentor, friend, or coach will help you stay on track.
Oh my! Another year has flown by, and we are now a family of 6 (fur kids count too). We welcomed our second daughter into our family back in February – my little sweetheart as I call her since she was a Valentine’s Day baby.
My baby girl is healthy as can be, but I struggled with a diagnosis of preeclampsia. I received the diagnosis during labor, which then carried on for a few months after childbirth. It was a scary time. I wish I could say that this was the only health concern I had, but it wasn’t. The baby blues that typically wear off within the first few weeks stuck around. Postpartum depression and anxiety got the best of me for about 7 months. It’s hard taking care of a newborn and a toddler when you yourself are not feeling well. All this to say, I am now 10 months postpartum, and feeling more like myself again after a rough start.
The baby is much more mobile now, crawling and pulling herself against furniture. She and my toddler giggle and play together. It makes my heart happy. My toddler is learning so much and repeats everything we say. She loves counting to ten. She loves hugging her stuffed Minnie Mouse and our Australian Shepherd. Seeing my husband as a girl-dad is so sweet. We have a happy home, and I am thankful.
Back in September, we took our first family vacation. We road-tripped to Oklahoma to visit my cousin and his wife. This was the first time they had met both girls, so it was fun to see them all bonding together. We explored their hometown as well as Oklahoma City. My cousins are very special to me, and that vacation was one of the highlights of my year. I wrote about our trip in my blog post titled A Family Road Trip to Altus, Oklahoma.
My family also found a new church home. Moving to a new church was a difficult decision because we love our old church family. They have been there for us since we were first dating, to marriage, to two kids. We still stay in touch, and my husband even helps with audio/video twice a month. But with our growing family, we needed to find a new church home with young families and children’s groups. It has been a good move for our family, and we have felt a warm welcome from the church members.
When my birthday rolled around in November, I made a commitment to myself to focus more on my health and fitness. Reflecting on the health challenges I had from my second childbirth made me realize that I need to be the best version of myself for both me and my family. I have been working out at the gym in our office building during my work breaks 2-3 times per week. I also supplement with Peloton bike rides at home.
On top of working out, I am also working on portion control with meals. I had to face my biggest weaknesses when it comes to food, and plan accordingly. For instance, chips and dip, and fries are a weakness of mine. Instead of depriving myself of them, I am choosing to eat only 5, and enjoy every bit of those 5. I also eat slower and don’t feel like I need to finish everything on my plate. I get full a lot faster when I slow down.
Besides health and fitness, I have additional goals for 2022 in three categories: personal, family, and faith. Here is what I will focus on for the new year.
Personal
Listen to 12 audiobooks, 1 per month, on my commute to/from work
Be consistent with my blog, posting 2 times per month
Give myself more grace when things don’t go as planned
Family
Stay active as a family – swimming, hiking, biking, etc. weekly
Limit screentime
Date nights w/ hubby 2x per month
More one-on-one time with each of our girls
Faith
Teach toddler about why we pray together
Work on kid-friendly bible learning and crafts
Be a good example and witness to others
Bless others in need as a family
As I reflect on 2021 and set goals for 2022, I realize that we are creating cherished memories together as a family. My kids will only be young for a short time. As many parents say – the days are long, but the years are short. I look forward to the new year, choosing to be present and cherishing the small moments.
Cheers to 2022!
