Chatfield State Park in Littleton, Colorado is surrounded by Chatfield Reservoir, a 1,423-acre lake in Jefferson County and Douglas County. It is one of 42 state parks in Colorado, and home to a variety of wildlife, including elk, deer, coyotes, foxes, and bears.
Just southwest of Denver, the ‘Mile High City,’ Chatfield State Park offers several activities for the outdoor enthusiast – a must-see area for family-friendly things to do in Denver. As a Denver local, I will share everything you need to know about Chatfield State Park.
Chatfield State Park is located at 9700 S. Wadsworth Blvd., Littleton, 80128. The main entrance is off of Wadsworth, just 2 miles south of C470. The State Park is located just 19 miles southwest of Denver.
A daily vehicle pass is $10 and an individual pass is $4. You can also purchase a Vehicle Annual Pass for $80. Additionally, Colorado residents can add a Keep Colorado Wild (KCW) pass onto their Colorado license plates for $29.
What I love about Chatfield State Park is the variety of things to do. Whether you want to enjoy time at the lake, go camping, or hiking, there are things to do for everyone.

Chatfield State Park is open for camping year-round at 197 sites. The state park requires advance campsite reservations with full electric hookup available from mid-April to mid-October. Campsites are available throughout the state park, walking distance to hiking trails and Chatfield Reservoir for boating, water sports, and fishing.
Locals and visitors love Chatfield State Reservoir for its boating. You can enter the lake from one of two boat ramps: the North boat ramp, which includes eight lanes, or the South ramp, which has two lanes. The main area is the Power Zone, great for boating and water skiing. There are also two No Wake Zones, at the southwest and southeast ends of the reservoir – perfect for fishing and canoeing.

Watersports are my #1 favorite thing to do at Chatfield State Park. Whether you enjoy paddleboarding, kayaking, water skiing, or tubing, there are plenty of areas to spend adventurous time on the water. You can rent equipment from 5280 Paddle Sports if you’re visiting or trying paddle boarding or kayaking for the first time.
Check out my post: Paddle Boarding for the First Time
The swim beach is another fun, family-friendly area of Chatfield State Park. Located on the west side of the park, the swim beach is a safe area for families to swim – away from boats and watersports-related activities. Grab a refreshment or bite to eat at the snack bar, lather up with some sunscreen, and enjoy some fun out in the sun.

There are several areas around the lake to enjoy a picnic or barbecue with friends and family. Whether you bring sandwiches and drinks or host a birthday party (like we’ve done for my daughter) there are plenty of picnic tables to set up. If you host a party, I recommend bringing an easy-up for shade.
There are several family-friendly hiking trails at Chatfield State Park. Keep in mind that they are beginner-level trails with not a lot of elevation. This is perfect for families with young children, or if you want to take a break from the campsite. For a list of hiking trails, visit Best Trails in Chatfield State Park.

We literally can’t even say Chatfield in my house without our dogs going berserk. When we talk about it, we have to call it “the C place.” With two ponds and 66 acres of land, dogs have free range to run around, explore, and swim. It’s our dogs’ favorite place to go. If you have four-legged friends, trust me – your dogs want to go to Chatfield!
If you enjoy horseback riding, Chatfield State Park is a great spot for it. Big Horn Stables has horse rentals, riding lessons, and day camps available. Enjoy the scenery of Chatfield Reservoir for a Riverside Foothills Ride or a Sunset Ride. Children can also enjoy a 20-minute pony ride for an introduction to horseback riding.
If you enjoy fishing, check out these Fishing Spots at Chatfield Reservoir in the “no wake” zones. The lake gets busy during the day, so I recommend fishing in the early morning or evening. For a Colorado Fishing License, visit Colorado Parks & Wildlife.
Thank you for reading my post about Chatfield State Park. It’s one of my family’s favorite getaways in the Denver area with so many things to do. Enjoy your adventures!
In the town of Morrison, just 30 minutes southwest of Denver, you will find one of the most iconic concert venues – Red Rocks Amphitheatre. The amphitheater is a bucket-list venue for musicians from all around the world. However, going to concerts is not all you can do at Red Rocks. The amphitheater is full of events for locals and travelers. In this article, I will share about all the things to do at Red Rocks Amphitheatre.
Depending on the event and time of year you go, Red Rocks Amphitheater is great for date nights, friend outings, or family-friendly events. From a local, Red Rocks is one of my favorite places to visit for family-friendly activities in Denver.

Red Rocks Amphitheatre is one of the most famous amphitheaters for musicians to play at. The way the acoustics sound bouncing off the skyscraper rocks is like nothing else you’ve heard. The Beetles, U2, John Denver, Bruce Springsteen, and Tim McGraw are just a few big names that have played there, making the Music Hall of Fame. You can also find a 12-foot bronze John Denver “Spirit” statue just outside of Red Rocks Trading Post.
Film on the Rocks is a summer series of classic movies at Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Families and friends enjoy watching a movie on the big screen while snuggling up with blankets and stadium chairs. Film on the Rocks is an enjoyable experience at Red Rocks that is friendly on the budget. General admission is $20, and VIP seating is $35+. To see their schedule for the upcoming summer season, visit Denver Film.
Red Rocks Amphitheater is also a popular area to go hiking. The family-friendly hiking at Red Rocks makes an especially fun outdoor adventure for parents with young children. Trading Post Trail at Red Rocks is an easy, 1.5-mile long loop with gorgeous views. Make sure to bring sunscreen and plenty of water, as Red Rocks is even higher in altitude than Denver, the mile high city – at a total of 6,450 feet.
From the spring to the fall seasons, you will find up to hundreds of outdoor enthusiasts running and exercising on the stairs at Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Running back and forth on the 69 rows of stairs from the bottom to top equates to a 2.7-mile run at Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Strong, long-distant runners who run directly straight up from the bottom to the top always find a crowd clapping and cheering them on.
As another workout at Red Rocks, this one gets its own section. Yoga on the Rocks is a ticketed event with live instructors and upbeat music. The stairs are lined with hundreds of yogis on mats, holding yoga poses while connecting with nature. To view tickets and pricing, visit Yoga on the Rocks.
Red Rocks is a gorgeous location for professional photos. Whether you are a landscape photographer or a portrait photographer, Red Rocks Amphitheatre provides a natural essence for both. There are several great areas throughout the amphitheater to take professional photos for the family, graduation, engagement, and sports teams.
Speaking of graduation photos, Red Rocks Amphitheatre holds graduations for some of the high schools in Jefferson County. Students receive their diplomas on the main stage with a crowd of their fellow students, family, and friends filling the stairs.
Red Rocks Amphitheatre is located 30 minutes southwest of Denver. Below is a map of places to stay near Red Rocks.
Thank you for visiting my family travel blog! I hope you enjoyed my post about things to do at Red Rocks Ampitheathre. If you enjoyed this post, please leave a comment!

What does a city that gets 300 days of sunshine mean? Baseball games never get rained out! Well, almost. The Colorado Rockies play at Coors Field, right in downtown Denver. This is a must-do family activity if you’re visiting Denver during baseball season!
The Rockies make the games fun for everyone, whether you have little ones or teenagers. Not only is it perfect for kids of all ages, but this is one of the most affordable activities in the city.
Average ticket prices range from $10-$50, depending on where you want to sit. If you’re really on a budget, head to the ticket office before the game for “Rock Pile” tickets, which go as low as $2 per ticket for some games!
The stadium is conveniently located on the Denver RTD line so you don’t have to worry about driving into the city. If hot dogs and peanuts aren’t your style, there are plenty of nearby restaurants to grab a bite before or after the game.
And to top it off, the sunsets from Coors Field are some of the best in the city. Perfect for taking a moment to enjoy and grabbing a few memory-making photos during the game.

The Hammond’s Candies factory tour is a fantastic family-friendly outing in Denver year-round. The free 30 minute tour can be booked up to six months in advance online and is usually offered Monday-Saturday between 9:15 amand 2:15 pm. Each tour will accommodate groups up to 45 people. Because it only takes 30 minutes, it’s great for all ages – older kids will enjoy watching the actual candy making process, and little ones with short attention spans won’t get too restless.
Kids (and adults) can get a kick out of sporting their own old-fashioned Hammond’s paper hat, and everyone will enjoy the free, large-sized candy cane at the end of the tour. The tour ends in a well-stocked candy shop, so be prepared to field requests from kids wanting an extra treat. Besides their traditional chocolates and candies, you can purchase more unique flavors like the Pigs N’ Taters chocolate bar or a frosting-filled birthday cake flavored candy cane. This is the perfect Denver spot for families looking for fun while staying on a tight budget.

Red Rocks Amphitheatre is one of the popular destinations when visiting Denver during the summer. While there are various red-rock areas to visit in the area, Red Rocks is unique because of its venue and activity offerings.
A short 20 minute drive from downtown Denver over to Morrison is required to find this park and amphitheater. The Red Rocks Amphitheatre is well known for its incredible acoustics thanks to the gorgeous red rock walls that surround the seating area. Taking in a concert here will be an incredibly fun and memorable experience. The amphitheater offers concerts of all types throughout the season. There are typically at least a few that are family-friendly (like The Piano Guys who occasionally drop in).
Along with music, the amphitheater also offers movies in the summer, right under the stars. The movies are always family-friendly options, perfect for a fun evening out.
But in addition to the amphitheater, families of all ages will love hitting the trails that surround the amphitheater. Trading Post Trail is especially fun, scenic, and easy enough for little ones to enjoy.
While shows, concerts, and events like yoga sessions have various costs to them, Red Rocks is free otherwise. That means parking, hiking, and visiting the Colorado Music Hall of Fame in the Trading Post is all free, making it the perfect and affordable day out for families. A visit to Red Rocks is ideal for families young and old thanks to the variety of activities.

Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) provides a refreshing escape from the heat in Denver from May to September. Ideal for those aged 8 and above, Denver’s reservoirs offer SUP fun for avid swimmers. The Denver’s SUP scene shines at several locations, that all have convenient SUP rentals, lessons, and calm, motorboat-free waters, catering to paddlers at any skill level.
Nestled in Chatfield State Park, Chatfield Gravel Pond boasts a mile-long stretch framed by beautiful mountain views. Aurora Reservoir offers a peaceful paddling experience against a backdrop of distant peaks. Nearby, Bear Creek State Park presents a prime spot with proximity to Red Rocks for an adventurous day out. Union Reservoir, a Longmont treasure, entices with picturesque views of Long’s Peak.
Rental prices vary from $20 to $30 per hour, with options for kids to share boards and availability of half or full-day rentals. Most of these locations require a daily park access fee, which ranges from $10-$20 per vehicle. Safety is paramount; life jackets are mandatory at all locations. Whether you’re a seasoned paddler or trying SUP for the first time, Denver’s reservoirs provide a fantastic place for this beloved water sport.
Rental and lesson options abound:

Located on the former Lowry Air Force Base on the eastern side of Denver, Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum is one of the best things to do in Denver with kids. Aviation enthusiasts will love this museum, which showcases more than 50 famous military and civilian aircraft, and includes hands-on activities such as flight simulators (some at additional cost) and an area where you can build and test your own paper airplanes. A separate children’s play area is geared towards children 6 and younger.
Since this museum is indoors, it can be visited year-round. Admission is $19.95 for adults, and $12.95 for children ages 4-16 (children 3 & under are free). Admission is also free for members of the Association of Science and Technology Centers’ reciprocal admission Travel Passport Program. Allow at least 1-2 hours to see the museum, although children are likely to be happy to stay for longer.

One of the best family-friendly things to do near Denver is take a day trip to Keystone. Basically a straight shot west of the city on I-70, Keystone is widely considered the best Summit County ski resort for families.
Kiddos as young as 3 can take lessons, and Keystone offers a variety of programs geared specifically toward children. Families with beginning skiers will want to start at Camp Keystone or the Discovery Learning area. Pricing varies significantly because of the various season passes, as well as dynamic pricing models, but Keystone is consistently a solid budget option. Night skiing is a big thing here, too, which gives you more time on the slopes each day.
The resort has plenty for families to do off the slopes, as well. Winter activities include ice skating, sleigh rides, snow tubing, concerts, seasonal festivals — (gumbo cookoff, anyone?), and more. And don’t miss the world’s biggest snow fort (which is exactly what it sounds like!), at the top of Dercum Mountain.
If you plan to make a weekend out of it, the abundance of on-mountain lodging options are not only convenient, but also some of the most affordable of any Colorado mountain towns.
Keystone isn’t just a winter destination, either. It transforms into a sun-drenched, wildflower-filled mountain playground come summertime, with hiking, biking, summer tubing, lake activities, golf, and more.

There are so many things to do in Denver, Colorado for kids, teens and adults. If you have a little extra time for exploration, plan a fun family adventure to Colorado Springs and the Garden of the Gods—just over an hour away from Denver. The Garden of the Gods is an amazing collection of red rock formations nestled against the Rocky Mountains.
The Garden of the Gods is FREE to visit and is open all year long—perfect if kids (and adults) love to hike, rock climb, take pictures, or scramble on rocks. There’s a little bit of something for everyone with over 20 miles of trails to explore in the park. You might find the best time to visit is from May through October.

If your family loves hiking in awe-inspiring destinations and delicious food, head to Chatauqua Park in Boulder. Maps of the trails can be found at the Rager’s cottage. Most are easy to moderate. If your kids are very young, it’s still worth visiting for the close-up views of the star of the show—the Flatirons.
Chatauqua Park is one of the best free things to do in Boulder, so in the summer you’ll have more crowds and parking will be more difficult. That couples with cooler temperatures make spring and fall are perfect. The fee for parking depends on the day of the week, and there is free street parking nearby. Weekdays work best if you can swing it.
It’s possible to picnic in the park at Bluebell Shelter, but the historic Chatauqua Dining Hall (reserve ahead) is a nice treat. This is one of the best restaurants in Boulder and there’s plenty of kid-friendly menu items. Plus your family will get a little dose of history. The building dates back to 1898!

Get in touch with Colorado’s western heritage by visiting Downtown Golden. Set only about 20 minutes west of Denver, historic Downtown Golden offers incredible views of Table Mesa, shopping, hiking, and beautiful green parks. Like Denver, Golden is a year round destination, but it’s especially wonderful in the shoulder months of May and September.
Kids 8-13 will love exploring Golden’s interesting shops, marveling at the statues depicting life in the old west that are dotted throughout downtown, and enjoying a treat from a local ice cream shop. For a budget-friendly meal, grab breakfast burritos from Bonfire Burritos on Ford Street.
Take a drive up to Buffalo Bill Cody’s Museum and Grave to learn about this fixture of Colorado history. The drive is beautiful, with opportunities to take in the scenic views from Lookout Mountain or even squeeze in a quick hike in Windy Saddle Park.
Many activities in Golden are free to visit, but the Buffalo Bill Museum is $5 to enter for adults and $1 for kids 5-17. Kids under 5 are free.
If you want to stay longer, consider booking a charming B&B or historic hotel in Golden.

It truly is the most wonderful time of the year in Colorful Colorado. The Christmas spirit has begun to fill the air with neighborhood decor. Colorado is a winter wonderland, a gorgeous state that brings snowfall that dusts the mountains beautifully.
If you have kept up with my blog, you know that family adventures are my thing. During our Christmas adventures, my husband and I sought out a new tradition for our family – Christmas at Gaylord Rockies.
We told the girls we had a surprise coming as we packed our bags with winter snowsuits, gloves, hats, and different outfits for our series of events. We buckled up and headed out for our getaway. With an itinerary in hand and a 6-year-old and 4-year-old full of curiosity, we arrived at our winter wonderland destination.
Our family arrived at Christmas at Gaylord Rockies for the weekend. We checked into our hotel room at the front desk and were shown the direction to our room. As we walked through the 5-star resort, the Christmas spirit filled the halls with décor and stunning lights.

Our girls were excited to see they had a bunkbed to sleep on. The layout of our Deluxe Family King room was perfect for our family of four. The main area had a king-sized bed, couch, desk, and TV. The bunk bed was in its own area separate from the main room with a second tv.

Shortly after we checked into our room, we headed to Mistletoe Village, located on the northeast portion of the facility. Walking into Mistletoe Village was like arriving at a magical winter wonderland you only see in movies. The layout was like the streets of a Christmas village, with an Elf Workshop, Reindeer Press Post, Mistletoe Sweet Spot, and more.

Most of the Christmas at Gaylord Rockies events were held in this space. Keep in mind that you need to have a reservation for all Gaylord at Rockies Christmas events.
The first event we attended was ICE! featuring Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! Beautifully sculptured ice scenes were displayed from the movie in a chilly 9-degree walkthrough. Upon arrival, we received parkas to wear over our clothing. This is the part where we pulled out our gloves, hats, and the girls’ boots, which we packed in our suitcase.
Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! is a favorite holiday movie in my house. ICE brought the movie to life in such a unique way, with all the characters we know and love, like The Grinch, Max, Cindy Lou, and all of the Whos of Who-ville. The ice sculptures are stunning and crafted with such intricate details.

Next was our girls’ favorite part – the ice slides. But, of course, my husband and I couldn’t resist joining the fun. There were 5 long slides perfect for older kids and adults, and one small slide for little kids.

After the themed exhibit, the ambiance shifted to the sound of “Oh Holy Night.” We passed through an ice tunnel and were greeted with a beautiful ice-sculptured nativity scene. This was a special touch that we were not expecting but my family appreciated.

Next up on our itinerary was the Gingerbread Decorating Corner. This was our 4-year-old’s favorite activity. We checked into the front area upon arriving and were given our gingerbread man cookie kits. Additionally, you can purchase gingerbread houses of different sizes.
We chose a table and started our cookie-decorating activity. Our girls loved the creativity that came with decorating our gingerbread family, which included gingerbread people, a dog, and a cat. A character dressed in a gingerbread man costume visited our table to take a photo which was a nice added touch.

After we decorated our cookies, we were given bags to wrap our newly decorated goodies in to take home with us.
We visited Mrs. Claus’ Christmas Traditions after breakfast the next morning. We entered the dim-lit room with an intimate area of bean bags before a fireplace room stage. On the stage was a rocking chair, Christmas tree, and oven. We were given milk and cookies as we waited for the show to start.
The show featured Mrs. Claus and a funny “oversized elf” named Snowflake. The characters were performed by talented actresses who sang, danced, and shared stories. They got the audience involved by asking questions and playing a Christmas game. For a 30-minute performance, it was engaging and entertaining for both kids and adults.

By the end of the performance, our girls were full of excitement. Especially our 2-year-old who couldn’t wait to take a photo with Mrs. Claus. The smile on her face said it all.
The final event of our Christmas at Gaylord Rockies adventure was Cirque: Spirit of Christmas. Actors and actresses performed a story of a child who lost the true meaning of Christmas in the busyness of the shopping season before an encounter with spirits who brought back the meaning of the season.

The performance brought acrobats performing individual and duo stunts on the floor as well as flying stunts from a ring in the air. This was an incredible show of immense talent with lively storytelling which kept the crowd engaged.
Along with the Christmas events we attended over the weekend, our girls each received a scavenger hunt booklet to complete during our weekend stay. The goal was to find the misfit toys throughout the resort with clues to find each toy.

Each toy we found gave a letter or symbol for a message at the end of the scavenger hunt booklet. Once we completed the scavenger hunt and figured out the message, we returned the booklets to receive a prize. Our girls thought the game was a lot of fun, and it was a unique way to see the different areas of the resort.
As we enjoyed our weekend adventures at Christmas at Gaylord Rockies, there were several restaurants we could choose from to dine at.
Vista Montagne: In the morning, we ate a delicious breakfast at Vista Montagne. They had a full breakfast menu to order from as well as an all-you-can-eat buffet. Our family ordered the Denver Skillet, Free Range Omelet, Kids Waffle, and Mini Rockies Breakfast. We experienced excellent service and a tasty breakfast to keep us full for several hours. My husband and I both thought the potatoes were spectacular.

Rockies Marketplace: While attending one event to the next, we found it very convenient to stop by the Rockies Marketplace for a quick bite to eat. The marketplace had grab-and-go foods, beverages, and snacks. We purchased from the marketplace twice during our stay. We particularly enjoyed the personal pan-sized pizzas and pre-made salads.

Other Food & Beverage:
In addition to the places we dined at, there are other restaurants and beverage areas to choose from including:
Christmas at Gaylord Rockies is an incredible magical Christmas getaway for the whole family. Whether you are traveling for the Christmas season, or live nearby and want to take a staycation, the experience is SO worth it. Our girls were skipping down the halls with pure excitement of the Christmas season during our stay. Seeing their faces light up through every encounter was an absolute joy for me to see.

Each of the Christmas events we experienced was unique and added a new element of excitement for our family. Our 6-year-old’s favorite activity was gingerbread cookie decorating, while our 5-year-old enjoyed the ice slides and stories with Mrs. Claus. Personally, I enjoyed walking through the ICE! displays of scenes from A Christmas Story as well as the Cirque: Spirit of Christmas performance. My husband’s favorite was also the ICE! featuring Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! event.
To enjoy the full experience for yourself, visit Christmas at Gaylord Rockies to book a room and purchase tickets.

During our anniversary trip to Coeur d’Alene (CDA), my husband and I experienced one of the most beautiful areas of the Inland Northwest on a Sunday Brunch tour with Lake Coeur d’Alene Cruises. We visited in August as the summer season was ending. The temperatures were in the mid-to-upper 80s during that week, a perfect time to enjoy all that Lake Coeur d’Alene had to offer.
Coeur d’Alene was a place we had never visited, but one we had our eye on for a few years. Being from Colorado, I will always pick the mountains over the beach – but I do enjoy time spent out on the lake. CDA offered both for us, being another area of the Rocky Mountains in Northern Idaho with a stunning lake to fill my adventurous soul.
As we were planning for our trip, we agreed that a boat tour had to be on our itinerary of things to do. We knew that a Sunday Brunch Cruise would be a relaxing activity to do toward the end of our anniversary trip.
This is my review of Lake Coeur d’Alene Cruises during the Sunday Brunch Cruise.
It was clear and warm that Sunday as we arrived at the dock at Independence Point. Check-in was smooth and we were guided to the boat we would be on for the late morning and early afternoon. While the line formed, we joined other couples, families, and a bachelorette party, all ready for a relaxing cruise.

As we boarded, we chose where we wanted to sit. There was indoor seating on the main level and outdoor seating on the upper level of the boat. My husband and I chose to sit at the upper, outer area of the boat at an open table. He went down to the main level to purchase a mimosa for me and grab a free coffee for himself. As he was in line, a sweet couple stopped by to ask me if they could join our table – which I, of course, said yes.
Shortly after the boat took off, it was time for a buffet-style brunch. The buffet included a wide variety of options – including French toast, eggs, hashbrowns, sausage, bacon, macaroni salad, mixed greens salad, rolls, and a table full of desserts.

As we enjoyed our delicious brunch, we visited with the couple at our table, who we found out were from a small town near the southern end of the lake. We had a nice conversation with them, and it gave us an appreciation for the welcoming people in the area which we noticed throughout our CDA trip.

After brunch, we walked around the boat to see different areas of the deep blue lake. It was relaxing listening to the crashing waves against the boat and the sweet sound of country music playing in the background (our favorite). I am always mesmerized by the gentle waves of water. There is something about the lake life that draws me in.

The captain of our cruise shared some history of Lake Coeur d’Alene, like how it dates back to the formation from the Missoula and Spokane glaciers during the last Ice Age. After being first discovered by European explorer, David Thompson in 1807, it was later used to transport mining of silver, gold, and ore across the water from Silver Valley.

One of the gorgeous sights to see (especially because my husband and I are golfers) was the Famous Floating Green from the Coeur d’Alene Resort Golf Course. I couldn’t capture a good photo of the floating green as we were too far away, but in this photo, you can see part of the golf course along the edge of the lake.

Another sight to see was the World’s Longest Floating Boardwalk. We walked along it a couple of times during our trip, so it was neat to see it while on the water. The floating boardwalk is 3,300 feet long, and a popular spot for a leisure walk.
Looking for other things to do while you’re in Coeur d’Alene? Check out my review of Circling Raven Golf Club!

As we ended our cruise, we exchanged numbers with the nice couple we met, planning to stay in touch. The weather was warm at that point, so we were ready for a sweet ice cream treat afterward. It was a fantastic day!
My husband and I would both highly recommend Lake Coeur d’Alene Cruises to anyone planning a trip to Coeur d’Alene. We took a cruise during our anniversary trip, but there were also families, friends, and wedding celebrations on the boat.
The staff was kind and helpful, the food was delicious with many options, and the overall experience was hands down the best part. You can enjoy a unique experience of the second-largest lake in Northern Idaho on a cruise.

We enjoyed the Sunday Brunch Cruise, a 90-cruise that began at 11 a.m. Lake Coeur d’Alene Cruises also hosts a North Shore Dinner Cruise with gourmet cuisine and a Sunset Dinner Cruise with romantic dining. Additionally, they have River Cruises and specialty cruises (for seasonal or wedding groups). To see a full list of options, visit Lake Coeur d’Alene Cruises.
*** Thank you, Coeur d’Alene for hosting us. All opinions are my own.***

Closest Major Airport: Chippewa County International Airport
If you need one of the best vacations for mom this Mother’s Day then try visiting Mackinac Island in Michigan. Just fly into either Pellston Regional Airport or Chippewa County International Airport and grab a free shuttle to the ferry dock from there.
Once at the port, boats regularly depart for the island and will have you arriving in around twenty minutes. The trip is well worth it since this charming, car-free island overlooks beautiful Lake Huron and is filled with elegant, Victorian homes that mom will love.
So, hop aboard a horse-drawn carriage and take in the stunning architecture of the Grand Hotel before visiting Fort Mackinac and checking out some local art at The Richard and Jane Manoogian Mackinac Art Museum.
Next, get outdoors and enjoy a 2.3-mile hike through Mackinac State Park to the famous Arch Rock. This is easily one of the best things to do on Mackinac Island since this limestone rock formation is probably the most famous attraction on the island.
You can also treat mom to a Moscow Mule and some delicious scallops at the Carriage House restaurant before returning to your room at Island House Hotel.
It’s a fabulous, boutique hotel overlooking the lake that features individually decorated rooms. Plus, you and your mom can enjoy a complimentary continental breakfast on the hotel’s stunning wraparound porch as you look out at the lake.

Mother’s Day began in West Virginia, when Ann Jarvis founded the holiday in 1908. More than a century later, there’s still no better place to celebrate Mom than in the Mountain State, and America’s Resort, The Greenbrier, is the ultimate spot to treat the mother in your life like a queen.
It begins with an incredible Mother’s Day Brunch, prepared by the award-winning culinarians at The Greenbrier. The feast includes omelet and pancake stations, house made pastries, smoothies, salads, chicken, salmon, shrimp and much more, and it’s topped off with amazing desserts like strawberry cheesecake and Italian cream cake. A photo of Mom with her family is provided by Greenbrier Photography, a perfect keepsake from an unforgettable day.
The brunch, however, is just the start of the memories to be made. With a world-renowned mineral spa, iconic golf courses, limitless shopping, the Studio G salon and unique activities such as horseback riding, falconry or scenic nature hikes, there’s plenty of ways to keep Mom — or whoever fills that important role in your life — entertained from sunrise to sunset, and even beyond.
If your mom is the active type, you’re in luck. Mother’s Day weekend also happens to be the date for the annual Greenbrier Half Marathon, which brings runners from around the country to America’s Resort to run on a course that shows off the beauty of the resort’s 11,000 acre property.

Alaska might not be on many people’s vacation lists, but it makes for a special place to visit with mom for a Mother’s Day getaway. Around Mother’s Day, Alaska begins its winter thaw, and humpback whales are arriving from Hawaii to feed.
Delta and Alaska Airlines offer flights to Juneau International Airport from and through Seattle, Washington. Four Points by Sheraton Juneau provide a great location downtown, within walking distance of shops and restaurants.
No visit to Juneau is complete without a visit to the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center. You can catch a shuttle to Mendenhall Glacier which takes 30 minutes, if you don’t intend to get a rental car. The park offers several hiking trails, with Nugget Falls being the most popular. You’ll reach a thundering waterfall at under a mile with little to no elevation gain. If you’re not up for a hike, the Visitor Center documents the glacier’s retreat, and you’ll learn about the area’s fauna and flora.
As the capital of Alaska, Juneau offers many thrilling adventures to enjoy with mom. Whale watching tours offer guaranteed sightings, and you could see sea lions, harbors seals, and bald eagles too.
Consider taking mom on a dog sledding excursion if you have no budget. After a helicopter ride to a nearby glacier, you’ll enjoy mushing a team of sled dogs around the ice field. By taking the tour, you’ll check something off your bucket list, and the best part is – you got to do it with mom!

Closest Major Airport: Louisville International Airport (SDF)
Louisville is home to the Kentucky Derby and so much more!
If you want to take mom to the Derby for a Mother’s Day getaway you’ll have to plan really early; like October of the year before or early to get in the lotteries. It’s an iconic race day full of Derby fashion. If that’s not in your budget or timeline you’re in luck. There are races after the derby closes. For horse things that aren’t Derby, check out Downs After Dark for a special experience with older kids or the Sunday brunch races if you don’t want to be out late. Admission is much more affordable after Derby and the experience is less over-the-top while still being special. You can bet on races or not. It’s a fun time either way.
The other iconic Kentucky thing is bourbon. If that’s something mom is interested in book a tour of a distillery. There are several small distilleries in Louisville. You can reach several big-name distilleries in an hour and a half: Maker’s Mark, Four Roses, and Woodford Reserve to name a few.
To see the city in a different way take a cruise on the Belle of Louisville. The Belle is a steamboat from 1914. Take sightseeing or dinner cruises on the boat for another special experience in Louisville.
Louisville has an impressive food scene. When it’s time to eat look at restaurants in NuLu or on Bardstown Road. In both areas, you’ll find exceptional local restaurants and shopping. Dairy Kastle is a must for ice cream at some point during your visit.

When deciding on a place to visit with my mom, I look for three things: good food, fun activities, and a relaxed atmosphere. One of the best places for a trip with mom for Mother’s Day is Scottsdale Arizona. It easily meets the criteria mentioned above.
Scottsdale is such a foodie city with amazing Mexican and southwestern cuisine. There are so many fun things to do in Scottsdale, ranging from hiking to lounging at the pool. Finally, Scottsdale has a relaxed environment that is great for a mother-daughter trip. People of all ages visit, and there isn’t too much of a party atmosphere.
One of my favorite activities in Scottsdale is simply lounging at the pool. With many nice resorts and warm year-round weather, Scottsdale is a great destination for sipping cocktails by the pool. For more adventure, there are many hikes in Scottsdale such as Mummy Mountain or Camelback. What I love about Scottsdale for a trip with my mom is the ability to hike a mountain in the morning, spend the day by the pool, then finish the day with a great dinner and drinks. Scottsdale Arizona really has it all for a perfect weekend trip with mom.

For a family getaway, we took a road trip from Denver to Montrose with our two children. Montrose is located on the Western Slope of Colorado, 60 miles south of Grand Junction. With a population of slightly over 20,000, Montrose is full of activities for outdoor enthusiasts. Its youthful culture brings an array of small businesses for local shopping and dining.
We chose Montrose because we love the Western Slope area and the drive from Denver to Montrose is easily doable with young kids. With a gorgeous drive through the Rocky Mountains, you get a chance to experience Colorful Colorado and all its beauty.
The drive from Denver to Montrose, Colorado is 300 miles via I-70 or 265 miles via Hwy 285 and US-50 W. Depending on traffic and the areas you want to drive through, you can take either route.
Having a family with young kids, we prefer to take I-70 because there are more places to stop along the way. However, Hwy 285 provides a much more scenic route, crossing through South Park and over Monarch Pass. Google Maps shows the drive slightly under 5 hours, but with young kids it took us closer to 7, including a stop for lunch. (To learn great tips for road-tripping with kids, Check out my post: 8 Greatest Road Trip with Toddlers Hacks)
On the drive there, we stopped at the iconic Beau Jo’s restaurant in Idaho Springs. Beau Jo’s serves Colorado-style pizza with a deep-dish crust and honey to dip your crust in. It’s a popular spot for skiers and mountain travelers, so make sure to plan a visit when it’s not too busy!

Just an hour north of Montrose, you can enjoy great food and local beer at Palisade Brewing Company. We met up with some friends (on the way back) who drove from their home in Fruita. The pub has indoor and outdoor seating with a family-friendly vibe.

I recommend the Canyon Creek Bed and Breakfast. Lodging includes single rooms in their shared main house or private vacation houses with multiple rooms. We enjoyed a comfortable stay at their Colorado Cottage vacation house, which was perfect for our family of 4. The home features two bedrooms and one bathroom, fully furnished with all amenities you will need.
We enjoyed having our own private house during our stay in Montrose. It was nice having the convenience of a fully stocked kitchen, as well as room for our kids to play around in the backyard.
Canyon Creek Bed and Breakfast is in the downtown area of Montrose, near local shopping and dining. Their main house includes an open garden area and shared jacuzzi for guests at any of their locations.

Montrose, Colorado is known for its Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, one of four national parks in the state. It also holds a history of becoming an integral part of the railroad transportation route with the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad Co., beginning in 1882.
The town is part of the Western Slope of Colorado, which is west of the Continental Divide. Other nearby towns and cities include Delta, Eagle, Ouray, Ridgway, and Grand Junction. Colorado’s Western Slope brings outdoor recreation like hiking, camping, fishing, hunting, boating, and water sports. The closest ski resorts are Telluride (66 miles south) and Powderhorn (67 miles north).
Depending on the time of year you visit, there are many outdoor activities, local shops, events, and places to dine. The town itself is full of families and welcoming locals.
Here is a list of 10 things to do in Montrose and nearby towns:
A visit to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is a must-see when you are visiting Montrose. The national park is 47 square miles with many scenic areas to take photos. You can spot wildlife like mule deer, bighorn sheep, beavers, chipmunks, and various bird species.

Learn about the history of the town, including its American heritage and cultural legacy. The museum showcases artifacts from Native Americans, farmers, ranchers, railroaders, and miners.
The farmers market is open year-round on Saturdays and features items from local farmers, ranchers, producers, and artisans of the Western Slope.

Outdoor enthusiasts love Montrose and nearby towns for their great hiking trails. If you are in the area, check out this article on hiking trails near Montrose for the best spots.
Montrose, Colorado, and the Western Slope are full of wildlife and great for hunting big game, small game, and waterfowl.
The state park and reservoir are just 30 minutes south of Montrose, located in the town of Ridgway. The reservoir is 6 miles long and an excellent spot for boating, kayaking, paddle boarding, and other water sports.

You can count on great views at the golf courses in Montrose with the mountains nearby. Black Canyon Golf Course and Cobble Creek Golf Club are both highly recommended public courses.
Camp Robber is a local restaurant in Montrose with a wide-variety of American food. We ate dinner there during our visit. I enjoyed their chicken cobb salad and my husband liked their burger. I highly recommend their restaurant.

Colorado Boy serves authentic pizza in Montrose, Ridgway, and Ouray. Its pizzeria and brewery are highly recommended by locals and travelers alike.
Whether you like drip coffee or a specialty latte or cappuccino, The Coffee Trader is a perfect spot for all coffee lovers. It is in an old cottage with a welcoming atmosphere.

The Dolly Steamboat dinner cruise is a unique way to experience Arizona and all its beauty on Canyon Lake. On this 2.5-hour cruise, you can spot wildlife like bighorn sheep and bald eagles, watch the sunset over the mountains and stare at the bright night stars. For a family adventure near Phoenix or a romantic night in Arizona, take a cruise on the Dolly Steamboat to see one of the most beautiful places in Arizona.
🛥️To book a full day on the Dolly Steamboat – purchase tickets here.
The Dolly Steamboat is located at 16802 AZ-88, Apache Junction, AZ 85119, at Canyon Lake Marina and Campground in Tortilla Flat, Arizona. Tours on the Dolly began in 1983 by the original owners, Paul and Dolly Kennedy. In 1987, it was purchased by the Grimh family, who have operated it since. The Dolly is 103 feet long and carries up to 142 passengers with a crew of 3. The boat has lower and upper sections, and tables align the covered and uncovered areas of the boat.

The Dolly is a one-of-a-kind experience in Arizona for families and couples. The boat holds a large history of celebrations – including engagements, wedding anniversaries, and birthdays.
Canyon Lake, located in the Tonto National Forest, is a gorgeous area for sightseeing. The national forest is in the city of Tortilla Flat, one of many small towns in Arizona. It is approximately 50 miles northwest of Phoenix, with a few windy roads and a scenic drive to get there. Cacti and other desert plantations line up the hills as you come upon one of the hidden gems in Arizona.
Canyon Lake is one of four reservoirs of the Salt River formed by the damming of the Salt River Project in 1925. During the Salt River Project, lakes were formed 60 miles long and used for reliable water supply, hydroelectricity, flood control, and irrigation. Canyon Lake is surrounded by spectacular cliffs and wildlife.
Theodore Roosevelt Lake was another lake formed during the Salt River project. President Roosevelt described the Salt River lakes as a combination of “the grandeur of the Alps, the glory of the Rockies, the magnificence of the Grand Canyon and then adds an indefinable something that none of the others have.”

On a trip to Phoenix to visit my brother, we enjoyed an evening on the Dolly Steamboat for their Twilight Dinner Cruise. The time frame was the beginning of October and the evening temperatures were in the high-80s. We sat on the front end of the lower level of the Dolly, near the beam.

🛥️To book a full day on the Dolly Steamboat – purchase tickets here.
Captain Ron led our cruise for the evening and gave us a tour of Canyon Lake Tonto National Forest along with its history. He would stop the boat often to show wildlife and rock formations with a laser pointer for all to see. That evening we saw bighorn sheep, but he also pointed out some eagle nests where eagles can frequently be spotted flying above.

The dinner cruise was 2.5 hours long and included a delicious meal of chicken, ribs, salad, sides, and cheesecake for dessert. We also enjoyed some alcoholic beverages, which can be purchased with cash inside the covered area.

Along with wildlife, you can see spot many famous rock formations in Arizona on the Dolly Steamboat. The first two you can spot are the Princess Rocks. You can see formations that look like heads and bodies which face one another.

Next, you can spot the cross formation in Crucifix Canyon. Legend has it that the cross is nature made. However, Captain Ron shared that priests spent much time in the area, so it is unsure if it is nature-made or human-made.

The last rock formation that was pointed out to us on Canyon lake was Gorilla Rock. The gorilla faces away from the lake. The moon appeared above the rock as we were passing by, so I was able to capture some great photos.

The Dolly Steamboat Dinner Cruise was the highlight of my vacation. It was a way that I could experience Arizona and all of its beauty while spending quality time with my brother. The music was relaxing, and the crew was friendly and welcoming.
In 2.5 hours, we enjoyed a memorable experience, including a fantastic dinner and dessert. We got to see the sunset, followed by the moon rising above the canyon. We learned about the history of the lake and spotted rock formations and bighorn sheep.

At the end of the night, the bright stars were above us as we returned to the dock. Captain Ron announced anniversaries and birthdays that were being celebrated that evening.

It was incredible to see one of the most beautiful places in Arizona on the Dolly. I will be sure to take another cruise on the Dolly next time I visit the area. Thank you, Dolly Steamboat, for a memorable evening!

In addition to the Twilight Dinner Cruise, other Dolly Steamboat cruises include the Scenic Nature Cruise, Astronomy Dinner Cruise, and the Game & Fish Bighorn Sheep Cruise. If you plan to take a cruise, make sure to book ahead, as they fill up quickly.

Paddle boarding is easily my new favorite outdoor activity. If you are curious about paddle boarding for the first time, you have come to the right place. Imagine floating on a lake alongside your friends while laughing, getting exercise, and drinking a beer; all without the cost and maintenance of a boat. That’s how I would describe it. Before I get into the experience of paddle boarding, I want to first mention the best stand up paddle board for beginners and what to wear paddle boarding.
This post contains affiliate links. I may receive a small commission if you purchase through a link on this page at no additional charge to you. Affiliate links help me pay for my site so I can continue to provide great content for my readers. Thank you for supporting my blog!
Prior to paddle boarding, I did some research and found that Body Glove is a trusted brand for SUP boards. Upon my findings, the Body Glove Performer 11 was the perfect mix of a beginner paddle board and amazing durability. It is an inflatable SUP board for easy packing and transferring. The Body Glove Performer 11 package comes with both a manual and electric pump, as well as a carrying bag. It also has a mount to add a GoPro camera. You can use the front of the board to store items like shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses, keys, and a cooler.
You will want to wear a swimsuit (with shorts if you prefer) and a life jacket. Yes, you need to wear a life jacket when paddle boarding. We went paddle boarding at Chatfield Reservoir, and Colorado Parks & Wildlife requires life jackets while paddle boarding. I imagine it’s the same at other state parks.
I bought a Body Glove Women’s Life Jacket for myself and a Body Glove Men’s Life Jacket for my husband. Both of our life jackets are light and comfortable.

The nice thing about paddle boarding is that it is easy to learn. Standing up takes balance and core strength, but you will catch on as your body gets used to it. You don’t have to stand up the whole time, or even at all. You can stay seated or kneel while paddle boarding.
Below are some tips I suggest while paddle boarding for the first time:
I suggest paddle boarding with friends who have been before. If you don’t know anyone who is a paddleboarder, join a group on Facebook. I am part of a Facebook group called Kayaking, Canoeing, and Paddle Boarding in Colorado and they often set meetups for paddle boarding.
When we went paddle boarding the first time with friends, they taught me how to effectively get on my board, where to go and not go on the lake, and how to stand up. Not to mention, we enjoyed some beer together on the lake with our paddles attached to one another’s boards. First, I didn’t know you could connect your boards together. Second, I didn’t know you could fit a cooler of beer on your board. That was cool!

To get on your paddle board, you will want to lean over onto your forearms to fill the width of the board. Using your weight to balance on your forearms, bring one leg up at a time. Continue to use your balance with your weight in the center of the board to pull yourself up.
It is important to keep your fin from hitting rocks and other things. Your fin keeps your board stable and straight. There will be times when the lake water is shallow, so be aware of your fin to keep it from hitting against the rocks.
The correct way to hold your paddle is with the blade angled forward. Typically, the logo is on the blade side, so keep the logo facing away from you. When paddling on the right side, put your left hand at the top and your right hand halfway down the paddle. Switch hand positions for the left side. Putting your hands too close together will keep you from gaining the most leverage from your strokes. Pull your paddle back using a J-Stroke.
Before standing on your paddle board, start on your knees. This will help you find your balance in a halfway position before fully standing. Keep your weight evenly between both of your knees. Leaning will cause you to tip over.
You can stand on your paddle board from the kneeling position or from the sitting position. Once you are in the kneeling position, put the opposite hand down on the board as the leg you are bringing up. This will keep your weight distributed evenly. Once you have one foot positioned on the board, stand up with a bend in your knees like you’re sitting in a chair. Slowly stand up all the way.
From the sitting position, form your body like a plank on the board. Walk your feet up toward your hands, keeping your weight on the opposite hand and foot. Once you have gained balance, slowly stand up with a bend in your knees until comfortably standing. If you have practiced yoga, think about it as going from a plank to a down dog, and then to standing.

This was by far the most popular tip that was shared amongst moms on Facebook. While the kids are still asleep (around 4 or 5 am) pack them in the car and start your drive. They might wake up wondering what is going on but will fall back asleep. This will give you a few hours of quiet time before they wake up full of energy.
Having multiple snacks is a must on your road trip. Have the go-to snacks that you usually have at home as well as some new snacks they have never tried. Try not to overdo it with beverages, otherwise, you will need to make multiple stops at restrooms.
Put together bags of toys from Target’s Dollar section for your road trip with toddlers. Map out your road trip and open bags at different checkpoints. This will keep your toddlers entertained and excited to open the next bag.
Window clings are a big hit on a road trip with toddlers. I don’t know about you, but we do not use window clings in our house unless it is for the holidays. They will have a great time decorating the windows and moving the clings around.
I had never thought of this idea, but this was mentioned a couple of times in the Facebook group. I know that my toddlers love magnets, so I will try this trick on our next road trip.
A road trip with toddlers is a time when it’s a-okay to take out the tablet. Make sure to download tv shows ahead of time on Netflix. We usually download our kids’ favorite shows as well as a couple of new shows. I also suggest hanging the tablet on the back of the seat. Even with the lock button on, my daughter still found a way to get out of the tv show, making us have to start it up again.
Your toddlers will build up a lot of energy while sitting in the car for hours. I suggest stopping at parks along the way so they can let out some of that energy. Lunchtime is a great time to stop at a park. Enjoy a picnic together and let the kids play for a bit. After the stop, they can open one of their new bags of toys again.
I thought this response was pretty funny. If the kids are fighting, play the quiet game. Whoever talks first loses. Hopefully, this gives you some peace for just a minute before they start fighting again and demanding snacks.
