Many people know that to get results they need to stay consistent and will go on their merry way. But I’m guessing that’s not why you stumbled across this page. You want to know how to implement consistency and crush your goals.

Consistency is the Key to Success: Follow These 8 Action Steps
Following these action steps will help you stay consistent with your goals. Consistency is the key to success, but it does take intentionality. Follow these steps to achieve your goals.
1. Know your “Why”
Having a strong “why” is the foundation for success. It’s what motivates you to continue. It’s what you fall back onto when things get tough. Your “why” can’t simply be, “I want to help people.” It needs to be stronger than this. When you are coming up with your why, it is best to find some quiet time. Search deeply for what is most important to you. Think about your morals and values.
2. Follow Good Habits
A great book to read is Atomic Habits by James Clear. In his book, the author mentions that many people often give up on their goals because they are not seeing immediate results. However, small daily habits will create massive long-term results.
An interesting analogy he gave in the book was a plane flying from Los Angeles to New York City. If the angle of the plane changes by just 3-degrees south will land in Washington D.C. It seems like such a small change at first, but in the long term, it makes a big difference. This can be with both positive and negative changes. The small things we are doing today whether good or bad will create compounding results in the long run.
3. Create a Plan – Consistency is the Key to Success
Use SMART Goals when coming up with a plan. That is goals that are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-Sensitive. Have the end goal in mind, and work backward to come up with monthly, weekly, and daily tasks to get you to your goal. Write your goals down and revisit them frequently.

4. Talk to Someone About Your Plans
When you tell someone about your plans, you are 1) more likely to go through with them; and 2) can have someone to keep you accountable. Be choosy with who you tell. Let this be someone you can count on to motivate and encourage you. I have made the mistake of telling the wrong people my plans in the past and received opinions that were unhelpful.
5. Use a Reward System
Make sure to use rewards that will align with your goals, and not make you regress. For instance, if you’re trying to lose weight, don’t celebrate with a fancy meal. Instead, celebrate with a fun activity. It is important to celebrate the small wins, not just the finished goal. This is especially important if you hit a plateau in your progress. Have an incentive to get you over that plateau and keep going.
5. Remove Any Known Barriers
This can come in many forms. The barrier may be your own negative thinking that will take a shift in mindset. It may also be something physical, like removing certain foods (alcohol, junk food, etc.) from your home. Another example is notifications that pop up on your phone and distract you from your work. In this case, you might put your phone in another room while you finish an important task.
6. Prepare for When Challenges Come
Inevitably, challenges will come in the process. These can be financial, physical, mental, etc. People can become discouraged by them if they are not prepared. This is a great time to look back at your “why.” When the challenges come, DON’T GIVE UP. Prepare for them, face them, and work through them. Ask for guidance if you need it. Think back to times when you faced challenges before and what got you through them.
7. Never Miss Twice
It is ok to miss going to the gym, making that number of sales calls, eating that junk food, or whatever goal you are trying to accomplish. Give yourself grace, but don’t do it again. Get back into it right away. A person who is not disciplined may fall back into the bad pattern again and think “what’s the point?” A disciplined person will find the motivation to get back on track again.
8. Revisit Your Plans Frequently
Look back at your plans and revisit your “why” often. You are your biggest motivator. Reaching your goals will take commitment and intentionality. Remember the feeling of when you were setting your goals in the first place.
Below is a real example I am currently using to put these steps into practice and stay consistent.
Goal – Lose 25 lbs. in 6 months – Consistency is the Key to Success
Know Your “Why”
I want to be the healthiest version I can be for both myself and my family. As a mom of young children, I want to introduce my girls to sports and outdoor activities growing up. With the energy that kids have, I want to participate with them and be a good role model for them in staying active.
Follow Good Habits
- Take workout clothes to work to use the rec center during breaks
- Limit myself to just 5 chips/fries instead of indulging
- Limit drinking to 2 nights per week, and only drink wine
- Focus on portion control with smaller portions and eating slower
- Look at the menu ahead of time at restaurants to plan for a healthier option
- Remember that consistency is the key to success
Create a Plan
- Losing 25 lbs. in 6 months = Losing around 4 lbs./month or 1 lb./week
- Workout at least 3 times per week for 20 minutes of increased heart rate
- Walk at least 5k steps per day
Talk to Someone About Your Plan
I will talk to my husband and a friend about my plans. Share my progress with my husband who I know will encourage me. I will choose a friend who has similar goals of following healthy habits for accountability. Plan for weekly check-ins on Fridays and set a calendar reminder to check in.
Use a Reward System
Schedule date nights with husband for first 10 lbs. lost and each 5 lb. lost after. I will choose an active date such as bowling, golfing, or other activity. We will go to a restaurant for dinner, but I will still choose a healthy option to continue with my good progress.
Remove Any Known Barriers
I know that chips and dip and fries are my weakness. Instead of eliminating them together, I will limit myself to just 5, and eat them slower to enjoy them.
With the holidays coming up, I will be choosy about what I put on my plate. If I have sweets, I will limit them to smaller portions. Before arriving at a holiday function, I will eat a healthy snack to keep from overindulging and following cravings.
Prepare for When Challenges Come
Some people may not understand why I am saying no to drinks or dessert at a function. Voices in my head might say that losing weight is too difficult or that I have failed in the past. I will choose not to dwell on those voices and remember my “why.”
I also know that I will at some point hit a plateau. In the past, I gave up at this point. This time, I will be aware that it is coming and will change my plan to persevere through it, because consistency is the key to success.
Never Miss Twice
I will give myself grace if I miss a workout or don’t follow good eating habits. Then, I will get back into it the next day, and not let it dictate the rest of the week.
Revisit Your Plans Frequently
I will revisit this post for inspiration or when challenges come. I know that I am ready to make fitness and healthy eating part of my lifestyle.
Consistency is the Key to Success – Final Thoughts
Now that you know consistency is the key to success and the steps to take. Staying consistent to your goals doesn’t need to be hard when you have a strong “why.” Always revisit your “why” when you get off track. Having an accountability partner, like a mentor, friend, or coach will help you stay on track.
I need to find a good person to be accountable with. My husband just wants me to be happy-even if it means all the desserts and my other friends don’t have similar goals
Never miss twice really speaks to me. This is exactly what I needed to read today.
Making a plan is half the battle! Successfully executing the plan with no excuses is the other half! Great ideas!
The mentality that helps me stay consistent is, “time will tick whether or not I focus and try, so i might as well try and keep up with time.”
So many pearls of wisdom. This a great starting point for me as I need to become more consistent to achieve my goals. I need to focus first on my “why”.
Having been dealing with a huge challenge lately, preparing for challenges really speaks to me.
These are great! I recently heard the idea of never missing twice or two days in a row. I like that idea. Good luck on the weight loss. You ‘ve got a great plan in place!
What a great article but moreover what a great life and goals you have! Way to go!
I was just thinking about this the other day. I have a few things I would like to accomplish but haven’t seemed to be able to get there. Instead, I have decided to establish smaller habits to help me accomplish my goals. This post was a great reminder.
