Golf is both an individual and team sport. When your teenager makes it on the high school team, they are playing for their best individual score, which will then reflect on their team’s combined score. During tournament play, each golfer on the team is split up to be matched with a foursome of golfers from different schools. After the tournament, scores are added up for each school to determine the winning team with the lowest combined score. This is different from basketball, football and baseball where players are on a team and the score is added as they play.
What’s unique about golf is that it’s a sport you can grow old playing. Sure, there are leagues for team sports post high school and college years, but it’s not the same. Golfing as an adult has given me many business opportunities, as well as memorable travel experiences with family. My dad told me about work tournaments I would be invited to when I was a junior learning to play, but I didn’t understand it at the time. As an adult, I’m thankful that he put me in lessons when I was young and encouraged me to keep playing.
When I think about my high school years, I can’t help but reminisce on the fun memories of the golf team. It’s where I met my best friend, who has become like a sister to me today. It’s when I pulled an all-nighter with the “veteran” girls to make tie-dye shirts and initiate our “newbie” girls at 5 am to surprise them and take them to breakfast.
We had fun, but we also learned about hard work and dedication. Every game of golf is different, and sometimes I had to make a choice between playing the distance shot or the “smart” shot. Golfers know what I’m talking about here. There are also a lot of rules and etiquette to the game which teach us to respect one another and respect the game.
So, why should you introduce your kids to golf?
- Some kids perform better when their score is reflected on individual performance.
- It teaches them life lessons like: patience, social skills, confidence, focus, and competitiveness. I elaborate more on this in my Introduction blog post.
- Just like any sport, they feel like they are a part of something. Practice is what they look forward to when they get to see their friends.
- Golf is a mental sport where your kids will learn to rely on and trust themselves when the pressure is on.
- As mentioned earlier in this post, golf is a sport you can grow old playing. Different generations within a family can play together.
My parents put me in lessons when I was 8-years-old, but some start even younger than that. One thing I’ve heard from a lot of golfers over the years is that they wished they would have learned to play sooner. I hope you will consider putting your kids in golf lessons!

You make a really good point about being able to golf even as you get older. I think its such an important thing to have kids in some kind of sports when they are younger because it teaches so many life skills! My oldest is track and field, basketball and volleyball!
Wow so many benefits! Playing sports definitely instills a positive attitude.
Yes, sports are so great for kids! I love that your oldest is a triathlete. That’s amazing!
I think any sport is good for kids, but you are right, golf might be a bit better for developing of specific skills. Thanks for sharing and good luck with your golf 🙂
Thank you for reading my post! 🙂
I love golf, I’m not a top but playing it makes me relax, concentrate and develop my attention.
You are completely right, there are so many things children can learn from playing golf. I agree that it is a mental sport and that it can help children learn real life lessons, but what I truly love is the fact that grandpa and grandson and can play alongside, that’s a sight I would really love to see.
I agree! I think it’s so special when grandpa and their grandchild play together. It will be neat for me to see my dad play golf with my daughter when she’s old enough.
This isn’t the first time I’ve hear this. God post. Thanks!
Wow, I haven’t come across opportunities here for kids to learn golf, so I found your post really interesting to think about! Sports + kids = so many benefits!
I totally agree with you
Thank you! I appreciate your feedback!
I completely agree with all your points. There really are so many great reasons to get kids into golf. I know my husband plans on getting our kids into golf as early as possible and I think I will have to learn to play to make it a family affair.
It’s never too late for you to learn! I hope you do!
My son has been asking to learn golf since he was 3, you bring up a lot of good reasons why I should give it a try.
That is amazing that he has had that desire since such a young age! Thank you for reading my blog post!
Totally agree with you! Thanks for sharing.
